Backward Building on Campus
The University of California Los Angeles main library building was constructed with its rear entrance facing the campus' main quad because the head builder was dyslexic and read everything backwards. The architect was so distraught by this that he killed himself.
Behind the Legend
The first part of this item is true in all particulars and also explains why all of the building's doorknobs are on the left. But despite the legend, the architect didn't kill himself over this relatively trivial detail. Instead, he took his own life because, in planning the structure, he failed to take into account the weight of the books and to this day the building is sinking into the ground at a rate of a quarter of an inch a year.
